Study setup

Set up your space. Choose what to share.

Use one screen or two. Then choose screen capture, a camera photo, or upload images, PDFs, and Word DOCX files whenever you want help with your work.

Choose a workspace layout

One screen

Keep Study and your schoolwork on the same display. Switch between the work and Side Owl windows or tabs as you need them. If one app takes the full screen, you won't see the other at the same time. Screen capture, camera photos, and uploads are still available.

Two screens

If you have two displays, put your schoolwork on one and open Study in a browser window on the other. Arrange the windows in the way that works for you. Side Owl sees only snapshots and files that you deliberately select and send.

Choose how to share a page

Screen capture

  1. In Study, select Screen capture, then press Share screen.
  2. In the browser picker, choose the tab or window with the work you want Side Owl to review, then confirm sharing.
  3. When ready, press Capture snapshot. Sharing a tab or window is not the same as sending it: Side Owl attaches only the deliberate snapshot.
  4. Review your selected snapshots and files, type or say your question, then press Send. Attachments are sent together with your question.

Camera photos

Select Camera capture and press Start camera. Allow camera access when your browser asks; if it was blocked before, change Side Owl's camera permission in site settings and reload. Frame the whole page so the writing is in focus and free of glare, then use Capture photo or Start countdown. Wait for each photo to appear before capturing another. You can retake or remove photos before sending.

Upload a file

Press Upload a file and choose PNG, JPEG, WebP, PDF, or Word DOCX from your device. Attach up to four images or files; each document can be up to 4 MB, PDFs are limited to 20 pages total, and each complete question request can be up to 32 MB. Review and remove selections before sending. Documents and extracted document text are turn-only. Images are also turn-only unless seven-day storage is authorized; see the privacy policy below.

If a permission prompt doesn't appear

Some embedded previews block browser permissions. Open Side Owl in its own tab and try again. For camera access previously denied, update Side Owl's camera permission in browser site settings, reload, and retry. Screen sharing is started only after you press Share screen and confirm a tab or window in your browser. File attachments are processed only after you send your question.

What stays private

Camera previews and unsent files stay on this device. Only deliberately sent images can be kept privately for seven days after adult opt-in or separate parent/guardian authorization in Family. Unexpired images can reopen with a local archived chat and be sent to the AI again for follow-ups. The AI provider’s retention is outside Side Owl’s control. Parents and administrators cannot view learner image contents. Chat text stays in this browser tab; Side Owl does not store prompts, replies, voice recordings, documents, or extracted document text. Activity metadata is separate and kept for 90 days. Earlier images cannot be recovered. Clear chat history or turn retention off to delete stored images sooner.
